Alila Ventana Big Sur is an adults-only luxury resort set on 160 acres along Highway 1 in Big Sur, surrounded by redwood forest and positioned on a coastal ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The property is secluded and rural, about 28 miles from Carmel and roughly 30 miles from Monterey Peninsula Airport, making it a destination resort rather than a quick city stopover. The resort has 54 rooms and suites tucked among meadows and redwoods, with a rustic-luxury design focused on privacy, outdoor space, and connection to the landscape. All rooms have plush king beds and private balconies or patios, while many accommodations add wood-burning fireplaces, ocean or forest views, oversized tubs, or private hot tubs on the deck. Alila Ventana Big Sur operates as an all-inclusive retreat for resort guests, with meals, non-alcoholic beverages, curated activities, wellness programming, snacks, minibar items, valet parking, and access to amenities included. The Sur House is the signature restaurant, emphasizing Mediterranean-inspired Central Coast cooking in a dramatic ocean-view setting. Wellness and nature are core to the experience: guests can use pools, Japanese baths, spa tubs, a sauna, a fitness center, and Spa Alila, or spend time on hiking trails and outdoor programming across the grounds. Nearby Big Sur sights such as Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Pfeiffer Beach, Bixby Bridge, and Point Sur Lighthouse are accessible via Highway 1.
These rooms reflect the resort’s core rustic-luxury style, with indoor-outdoor living and a secluded setting among the redwoods and meadows. They are designed for two guests and include the resort’s standard king-bed configuration.
Forest-oriented rooms emphasize the property’s redwood setting and sense of retreat. Large openings to private outdoor space keep the room connected to the surrounding landscape.
Suites provide a more expansive version of the Ventana experience, with upgraded living space and the same emphasis on outdoor connection. Many suites include fireplaces, enhanced views, or larger bathrooms depending on category.
Select higher-tier accommodations add a private hot tub on the deck, creating a more cocooned retreat experience. These rooms or suites are especially suited to guests who plan to spend significant time relaxing on property.
Standalone villas offer extra privacy within the resort’s spread-out 160-acre setting. They are positioned as a more secluded option beyond the main rooms and suites.
The resort also offers glamping sites for guests who want a more immersive nature stay while still using resort services. These are separate from the main room and suite inventory.
The resort’s signature restaurant is perched above the Pacific, with forest, mountain, and ocean views shaping the experience. Meals at The Sur House are included for resort guests, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients from California’s Central Coast.
The Glass House is an intimate venue used for private dining experiences and special occasions. It offers a more secluded setting than the main restaurant.
SurStream is a seasonal outdoor dining venue set among the redwoods. It provides a more casual, nature-immersive alternative to the resort’s main restaurant.
The resort offers poolside dining around outdoor gathering areas such as the Ocean Meadow Lawn, Sundeck, and pool areas. It is designed for relaxed meals and drinks between swims, spa time, or time outdoors.
In-room dining is available 24 hours daily. Meals and non-alcoholic beverages are part of the resort’s inclusive stay model for guests.
