The property redevelops Palácio Santa Clara while preserving its historic architecture as a mixed-use hotel and residence project in Lisbon’s oldest district. Interiors introduce color, tactility, and play through the work of designer Jaime Hayon, with architecture by Samuel Torres de Carvalho, transforming spaces that once served as a college and naval hospital into guest accommodations and public areas. Around 170 guestrooms and 24 long-stay apartments occupy the building, which rises above Alfama with views of the Tagus River. Ground-floor spaces include a lobby lounge, a pharmacy bar in the former storeroom, and an all-day dining restaurant with three terraces opening to gardens, while an upper-level café, spa, and gym sit alongside event spaces. A rooftop bar and terrace provide panoramic city and river views, and the pool deck integrates into manicured gardens overlooking Santa Apolónia station. The hotel emphasizes programming in food, music, art, and culture open to both guests and locals, marking The Standard’s first property in Portugal.
When to go.
Shoulder-season months offer warm but not hot sightseeing weather around 18–23°C, low rainfall, long daylight, and are recommended for city walks and cultural activities while avoiding peak-summer crowds and prices.
July and especially August bring peak summer heat with average highs around 28–30°C, occasional very hot days, the year’s highest visitor crowds, and higher hotel rates.
